Adam Bass

Chair

I joined the Birss group as a MSc student in September 2022 and transitioned into a PhD program in June 2024. My research focuses on a branch of fuel cell technology known as solid oxide fuel cells, which utilizes all-ceramic components and operates at temperatures > 400 oC.

Outside of my work I enjoy playing squash and going bouldering with friends. I am always looking for an excuse to go touch grass and explore – maybe even hike.

Hisham Elaqapa

Vice-Chair

I'm a master's student at the University of Calgary, where I research the structure–performance relationship of mesoporous carbon supports in PEM hydrogen fuel cells. Outside the lab, I enjoy soccer, learning new languages, and supporting Arsenal FC.

Hannah Cameron

Treasurer

I am from Nova Scotia and joined Dr. Birss’ research group at the University of Calgary in September 2024. My research focuses on developing catalysts for low-temperature carbon dioxide reduction—a promising approach to both recycling carbon dioxide and storing renewable energy. Outside of the lab, I enjoy skiing, crocheting, and spending time outdoors.

Sydnee Dronsfield

Secretary

I am from Calgary and joined the Birss group in 2023 as a M.Sc. student but have since transferred to a Ph.D. in Chemistry. My work focuses on utilization of saltwater electrolysis for green hydrogen production by developing selective, stable and cost-effective anode materials. Beyond the lab I enjoy reading, baking and travelling.

Event Coordinator

I am from Vietnam and moved to Calgary, Canada in 2012. After obtaining my combined degrees in Education and Natural Sciences, I have joined the Shi group at the Department of Chemistry, University of Calgary, in 2020 for my graduate study. I am currently a PhD candidate with my research focusing on the fabrication, characterization, and application of metal nanoparticles and semiconductor nanowires.

My research journey started in Fall 2024 where I began my undergraduate honours research project with Dr. Shi, which eventually lead me into being a Masters student within her lab now. My work focuses on using a pulsed laser to form a 4-metal alloyed nanoparticle to be used as an electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Outside the lab, I enjoy hiking, travelling, and crocheting

Viola

Birss

Faculty Advisor

Dr. Viola Birss is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Calgary and the Scientific Director of CAESR-Tech (Calgary Advanced Energy Storage and Conversion Research Technologies). She also serves as Electrolysis Theme Co-Lead at the Hydrogen Production Technologies (HyPT) Global Research Center. Dr. Birss previously held a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Fuel Cells and Related Clean Energy Systems for two consecutive 7-year terms, and her research continues to focus on advancing clean energy technologies.
