Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a versatile technique for the morphological, structural, and chemical characterization of a wide range of materials. A TEM can be run in various modes for imaging, diffraction, and microanalysis, to yield valuable information about the properties and behavior of materials at the nanoscale. This talk will give an overview of a few imaging and diffraction techniques and the structural and chemical information that can be derived from them. This will be followed by some examples of TEM analysis in bulk materials, thin films, and nanostructures to demonstrate the utility and versatility of the instrument to characterize materials at various length scales. The examples would illustrate the different modes of TEM operation and post processing required to fully characterize a typical sample.  Furthermore, the focused ion beam (FIB) instrument would also be introduced which is a very convenient tool to prepare TEM samples of a variety of materials including metals, metal oxides, polymers, etc. To illustrate the efficacy of the FIB, the various steps involved in the TEM sample preparation of a ceramic oxide with surface nanostructures will also be presented.  


Haris Masood Ansari is a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Calgary. He received his BS degree from Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, Pakistan, MS degree from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, South Korea, and PhD degree from The Ohio State University, USA, all in Materials Science and Engineering. His PhD was focused on the development and characterization of self-assembled surface nanostructures in ceramic oxides. His current research is focused on the development of ceramic oxide catalysts for high temperature CO2 electrolysis in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC) by using nanomaterials and nanoengineering approaches.
